The G.M. Fra Antoine De Paule Philharmonic Society participated with great success in three important music contests.
This contest was held at the Sir Temi Zammit Hall of the University of Malta. The four contesting bands were Banda De Paule of Paola, Banda San Mikiel of Zabbar, Banda Santa Marija of Qrendi and Banda Santa Marija of Mosta. The Paola Band was professionally prepared for this contest by its Director, the well-known Mro Carmelo Caruana. However Mro. Caruana could not direct the band on the evening of the contest as he was barred from doing so by the King's Own Band Club of Valletta (as per agreement between this club and Mro. Caruana himself). Mro. Orazio Cachia, the Paola Band's Honorary Director, was chosen to deputise for Mro. Caruana and he did an excellent job leading the band to a magnificent victory. The music selected by the Paola Band for this contest was the following:
Fifteen local bands participated in this contest and the four finalists were Banda Kristu Re of Paola; Banda Cittadina of Sliema; Banda Peace of Naxxar and Banda De Rohan of Zebbug (Malta). In a packed Manoel Theatre, Banda De Rohan was awarded the first prize and Banda Kristu Re placed second. Considering the fact that some of the leading Bands took part in this contest, this was another prestigious results for Banda Kristu Re of the Socjeta Filarmonika G.M. Fra Antoine De Paule. The music selected by the Paola Band for this contest consisted of the following:
Malta was represented in this international event by the Banda Kristu Re of the G.M. Fra Antoine De Paule Philharmonic Society. Mr. Bram Gray, an authority
in the music field, announced the result declaring Banda Kristu Re as the winner
of the first prize in the Category A Competition open to bands with more than
thirty-five musicians. Mro. Archibald Mizzi and his band fully deserved the loud
applause that greeted the announcement of the result after a wonderful and
memorable performance. This success by the Paola band becomes more remarkable when one considers the fact that it was achieved after harsh competition from Musikzerg F.Z. Holzheim, a well-known German band which had won several honours such as the award of the International Music Festival in Lierden in the Netherlands and a gold medal in the Regional Games Competition held in 1982. The music selected by the Paola band for the Malta International Brass and Woodwind Festival consisted of the following:
