The first Good Friday procession in Paola was organised after the Second World War in 1945, with just the statue of the Redeemer, the work of the artist Antonio Farrugia which can still be seen today. Two years later the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows was added and the procession remained with these two statues until 1970. In 1971 five more statues were added following hard work by Fr. Amando Ballucci. He took the initiative to create these statues from various other statues and he managed to finalise the Scourging at the Pillar, the Ecce Homo, the Veronica, the Crucifixion and the Dead Christ. Following this experience Mr. Antonio Farrugia was given the task to produce a new set of statues which was finished in 1975. Starting in 1987, the statues gradually were all changed (except for the statue of the Redeemer) and now Paola can boast of a magnificent set of artistic and baroque statues which are the works of Alfred and Michael Camilleri Cauchi, the well-known Gozitan artists. The following is the complete set of the statues which are carried shoulder-high by a number of people during the Good Friday Procession in the Parish of Christ the King, Paola. Details from some of the statues are also presented to highlight even further the work of art in these statues. All photos on this webpage are protected by copyright©.
