In 1897 Don Carm was the Rector of the Church of St. Ubaldesca in Paola. Dun Carm worked very hard for the well-being of the Church and the village of Paola in general. He was responsible, together with Don. Salv Busuttil who toiled to enlarge the church and to decorate it with major works of art. On 29th August 1905 Paola became a Vice-Parish and the work in the church of the Rector Bologna continued to increase. The village continued to get bigger and following heavy pressure from the Paolites, Archbishop Pietro Pace conferred the title of Parish to Paola on 12th July 1910. We can safely say that Don Bologna played a key role in the development of Paola.
Canon Carmelo Bologna was born in Valletta on 15th January 1845. His father was Frangisk and his mother Carmela nee Caruana. He was baptised a day later in the Parish of Porto Salvo by the Dominican friar Filippo Domenico Sammut. He was christened as Carmelo Paolo Clement Giuseppe Mikiel Felic Domenico. His godfathers were M'Ang Cardarone and Clementina Micallef. Following his primary education he entered the seminary of San Calcedonio in Floriana but he did not continue his studies to become a priest. He therefore remained a cleric. The cleric Bologna had the responsibility of establishing the eight canonry in Nadur, Gozo. Since he was 53 years old he could not become a priest so Archbishop Mons. GianMaria Camilleri had to ask for a special permission from Rome so that Carmelo Bologna could establish the Theological Canonry. The permit was received on 22nd March 1904. He became a Canon in June 1904. During this same period he used to work at the Curia in Floriana and he was also the Rector of the church of St. Ubaldeska. Don Bologna lived in Paola till the latest years of his life until he went to live in the Parochial House of Gudja. He died at 6.00 a.m. on 29th November 1930 at the venerable age of 86 years in Gudja. He was buried in tomb number 13 in the Addolorata cemetery. |
