Ignazio Catania was born on 29th January 1860. His parents were Julian and Regina nee German. He was married to Francesca Camilleri from Zurrieq and had five children.

He started to play the coronet with the "Banda San Gorg" of Cospicua. Between 1883 and 1893 he directed the "Banda Mannarinu" of Zurrieq, whilst taking care of teaching the new band players of the same Society, He was Assistant Director with the "Banda San Gorg" of Cospicua and was also the Director of other band clubs including those of St. Leonard (Kirkop), Beland (Zejtun), Unione (Vittoriosa), "Marija Annunzjata" (Tarxien) and obviously De Paule (Paola).

Ignazio Catania died on 4th August 1939 in Cospicua at the venerable age of 79 years.
